This made me think of Silent Hill and The Superdeep. It's the kind of genre movie I appreciate. Horror mixed with a bit of fantasy and unafraid things top it off with plenty of original lore. Sure enough, there are some big clichés here (which I won't spoil), but Derrickson and his crew made absolutely sure this wasn't just core genre filler. The introduction is a bit slow (though it's not particularly boring) and the ending could've been better, but the best bits are when our dynamic duo enters the gorge. Some cool sights there and a few scenes that put me on the edge of my seat. Teller and Taylor-Joy are good as always, so I've got nothing to complain about. Good genre fun.Read all

Derrickson takes on one of Joe Hill's short stories. It's no real surprise then that the horror elements are relatively light, nor is it shocking that quite a few details were added to pad out this film. The result is pretty decent, but not something I'll remember for years to come. Hawke's masked kidnapper is the big star of the film, but he isn't quite as menacing as he could've been. The 70s setting feels a little random and the plot can be a little convenient, but Derrickson shows himself a very capable director who can do right to a film like this. Pretty fun horror filler.Read all

It's a bit late to do a '85 episode of the V/H/S anthology if you ask me, but I guess it made sense since they never actually handled the 80s explicitly. This certainly wasn't the best of the series, but I figured I'd give it a go as there's already a new one out. Keeping up with horror films is a bit harder these days. There are some decent segments, but the old V/H/S look is a bit overdone and I'm not a fan of the 80s aesthetic at all. I liked the wrap-around segment best, and the Mexican one was interesting too. The rest felt obsolete and derivative. There's still some decent fun to be had for hardcore horror fans, but this series needs a quality injection if it wants to keep on going.Read all
