Sam Esmail

Comet is quite the calling card for Esmail. It may be his first feature film, but it feels very polished and firmly directed.

A neat, mysterious thriller. The concept isn't new, but the execution is far better than most of its kind. An apocalyptic event takes place when a family is enjoying their vacation far away from the rest of the world. They have no outside information and they are unsure of what to do next. The way Esmail feeds little pieces of information that don't quite clear up the mystery but still give you more to chew on is expertly done. The cinematography is superb (the camera work in particular deserves a mention), the editing is next level and the performances are strong. A great film that felt fresh and relevant.
