Stark and atmospheric reinterpretation of several Grimm fairytales. Oz Perkins' style is quite minimal, but very precise and effective. Beautiful cinematography and a killer soundtrack make this a very dark and moody film, which nails the balance between its fantasy and horror elements. A very nice surprise indeed.

Perkins can do more than just creepy and moody horror, he's also quite apt at comedy. Tackling the famous Stephen King short story, Perkins avoids the trap of turning it into a straight-faced dull horror spectacle. Instead, there's a streak of dark comedy present that livens up the film and makes it one of the best King adaptations out there. The kills are hilarious, the performances are tongue-in-cheek and the ending is appropriately over-the-top. If you go in expecting a basic genre effort, then disappointment will be the natural outcome. But if you appreciate a good chuckle while unsuspecting victims die horrible deaths, Perkins' latest is a real treat.Read all

Perkins continues to distinguish himself as a modern horror director. Longlegs is more of a police procedural, but with some very twisted and gruesome scenes that show Perkins' affinity with the horror genre. I wasn't entirely happy with the '90s setting, but he's an undeniable talent and there are some great scenes here. Monroe and Cage are also excellent, giving their characters something unique. The presentation is refined, Perkins builds up the tension perfectly and the film delivers when it needs to. The dreary setting and focus on the investigation keep this film from receiving an even higher score, but kudos to Perkins for delivering another great movie.Read all
