A solid biopic on the early days of the famous designer. Tautou does a fine job, but she's easily outclassed by Poelvoorde. When he disappears from the stage, the film starts to drag a little. Still, a pleasant enough watch that doesn't adhere to the classic rise and falls structure of biopics. That alone is laudable.
A somewhat disappointing rewatch. All I remembered about this film was an entrancing performance by Béart, and that memory was justified. The problem is that there isn't much else. The other performances are bland, the presentation is decent but not that remarkable, and the story is quite predictable. Béart is a vision, but Ardant and Depardieu can't match her performance in the slightest. There's not enough chemistry between the actors and the plot is a little too obvious, which makes the ending fall flat. The presentation is also a little lackluster, but at least some attempts were made. It's not a terrible film, just far removed from the greatness I remembered it to be.Read all
