Plot: The film revolves around Matvei, a young simpleton who is deeply in love with Olya, a struggling actress. When one night she opens up to him and tells Matvei about the abuse she suffered from Andrei, her father, he doesn't have to think twice about Olya's request to get rid of him. You take a little Tarantino, add a bit of early Jeunet and you top it off with some light Wong Kar-Wai. Give it a good shake and that should give you an idea of what to expect from Sokolov's Why Don't You Just Die! It's a delightfully stylized dark comedy with plenty of giggles, liters of blood and just the right amount of class. It's a magnificent debut feature that shows Sokolov has ample love for genre cinema, but isn't afraid to add a signature of his own.
